Kunstplass has the pleasure of presenting this year's Human International Documentary Film Festival artist Ali Jabaly with the exhibition INTERNAL SHADOW. Ali Jabaly is a 27-years old Palestinian artist from Gaza, who currently resides in Northern Norway.

Ali Jabaly has for several years worked on art projects related to the occupation of Gaza. He is particularly concerned about the human challenges and the lack of freedom of movement both in Gaza and with the outside world. The exhibition Internal Shadow is related to the situation of young people, while also reflecting his inner emotions and sense of being under siege both psychologically and physically. Ali is breaking boundaries through his artistic expression and use of colours and images.

"Through art, I try to express the steadfastness of the Palestinian people."
Ali Jabaly

For the film festival in Oslo Ali has painted a new large mural on the wall inspired by an exhibition he recently created in Gaza entitled "Dreamers among the rubble". This exhibition took place inside a building in Gaza that was destroyed by bombs in 2014. How do you find the soul in the destruction? Ali asked himself as he started the project. He decided to transform the bombed-out shell and crumbling facade of the famous Italian complex in the Nasr area of central Gaza into a fantastic open-air exhibition. He created large portraits of people longing for a better life, and through art he managed to bring life back to the building. At Kunstplass in the middle of Oslo, he deconstructs the white walls and make the viewer experience art in a new manner.

Ali Jabaly was born and raised in Gaza. He became interested in art already as a kid, and gradually developed his artistic skills in graffiti. He studied interior design, and he is a professional painter specialized in portraits, fine art, illustration, and digital art painting. In the fall of 2019, he started a BA at Nordland Film- og kunstfagskole in Lofoten. He has participated in several art exhibitions nationally and internationally, including at Small Project in Tromsø in June 2019.
